TIPS FOR OWNERS BEFORE BOARDING YOUR PETS
February 3, 2007

Q: What do I need to do before my pet is boarded into a kennel along with other cats and/or dogs?

A: Before boarding in a kennel, your cat or dog would need to be fully protected against all transmissible diseases amongst either cats or dogs. There are a few diseases that are transmissible between cats and dogs (e.g., rabies, mange, fleas, ticks, lice, etc.) but for the most part, diseases are transmitted between members of the same species (e.g., dogs to dogs, cats to cats). Vaccinations take time to take effect so all pets should be current on the following vaccinations AT LEAST 10-14 days prior to boarding.

EXTERNAL PARASITE CONTROLS:

Q: What should I do to protect my pet against fleas and ticks during boarding?

A: External parasites (e.g., fleas, ticks, lice, etc.) are a natural concern. A flea and tick preventive such as ※Revolution§ (available only by prescription) or ※Frontline§ may be considered under the supervision of your veterinarian. The preventive should be applied in advance of boarding.

It is highly recommended that your pet have a physical examination if there are any concerns about the above-recommended requirements. Each pet is unique and the veterinarians at the International Center for Veterinary Services can advise you on how best to prepare and protect your pet before boarding.
