Legal Requirement:

Microchipping is a unique identification method for pets. A microchip, which is as small as a grain of rice, is injected subcutaneously in the area of the neck or shoulder of the pet. When scanned by a microchip scanner, the unique number will show up on the scanner and the animal may be identified against his/her records that also feature the microchip number (e.g., vaccination records, rabies antibody titre test report, customs export document for international travel, etc.).

While microchipping is not uniformly required for pets in Beijing municipality or nationally, microchipping is recommended for all pets.  Some cities, through their district Public Security Bureaus, have been introducing microchipping for dogs registered in their areas of jurisdiction.

The International Center for Veterinary services (ICVS) provides microchipping services for pets with the ISO 11784/11785 standard microchips currently required by the EU/UK/USA and all other countries.

ICVS microchips are manufactured in Germany and are compliant with standards of the PRC, EU, UK, UAE, USA, Japan, Singapore,  and all other countries.

Please contact ICVS for microchipping services for your pets.

Pet Identification:

Pets that are microchipped should still have a pet ID tag attached to their collars. Local animal control and Public Security Bureau precincts are not required to have scanners and will not routinely scan lost and found animals for microchips.

As microchipping is not required on a municipal or national level for domestic pets, there is no central database for the registration of microchipped pets. However, microchipping is still extremely helpful for pet owners to identify their pet and to prove ownership, especially if the pet is lost/found. Even for microchipped pets, a pet ID tag with the owner’s home and mobile numbers is still the most effective method of reuniting lost and found pets with their owners. All dogs and outdoor cats should wear an engraved ID tag.

ICVS can engrave customized pet ID tags in English and Pinyin. Tags may be engraved on-site at ICVS within minutes. Please contact ICVS for more information about pet ID tag engraving.

Microchipping Requirement for Pets Exiting from China:

The PRC Entry-Exit Customs and Quarantine Bureau requires all pets departing China to be microchipped. The microchips required are the European Union ISO 11784 /11785 model carried by ICVS. Please note that microchipping is required for pet export from China on a national basis and pets will be scanned by Customs Bureau authorities before the pets may depart.

ICVS can help insert microchips for all pets. ICVS can also scan already microchipped pets with our universal microchip scanners.

ICVS can also ship microchips to pet owners outside of Beijing which may be inserted by local veterinarians. Please contact ICVS if you wish to order an internationally compliant ISO microchip manufactured in Germany.

Please contact ICVS with any questions about microchipping for pets.
